Acura Tire Department

If you brought your car to us for Acura's suggested maintenance before, you have already dealt with our tire center as some of the inspections on your car involve your tires.

What Happens at the Acura Tire Center?

In any case, when you come into our tire center, we will put your car on a lift and take a look at how the tread on your tires is wearing. It should be worn evenly on both sides of each tire. If your tread is worn down too low, you will need to replace your tires to maintain the appropriate level of traction during inclement weather. If your tires' tread is deep enough, we may simply rotate your tires to keep your tread wearing evenly across all tires.

Your tires determine how your car handles, especially in an emergency. All four tires on your Acura don't experience the same stress and use. In general, your front tires take more of the stopping pressure. Uneven tread will cause your car to pull to one side or another, fighting the direction you want to turn your car. Because of these things, tire manufacturers recommend that your tires be rotated every 6,000 - 7,000 miles. Some people do this with their scheduled maintenance oil change. In general, the front tires go to the back and the back tires go to the front when your tires are rotated. The tires are also rotated side to side so that your right front tire will end up on the left rear, and so on. Yes, you need to rotate your tires. Radial tires are designed with the expectation that the tires will be rotated to even out the tread.

Often, the technician will ask you about your driving. He or she is not trying to see if you break speed limit laws. They are looking for any type of driving that could cause faster degradation of your tread and any damage to your tires. Many drivers often drive in severe conditions without realizing they do so. Off-road driving is not the only kind of driving that needs extra precautions. Our technicians are local; thus we can give you ideas about what kind of tires you need in the winter and summer months in the greater Chicago area.

How Important Is the Air Pressure in My Acura's Tires?

All tires need a sufficient amount of air pressure in them to function well. Tires should be checked often to determine if the tires' air pressure is at the appropriate levels. Your tires come with the prescribed air pressure already in your tires when your car leaves the factory. It is up to you at that point to keep the right amount of air in them. Of course, if you damage your tires, you will most likely lose air, sometimes slowly without you realizing it. Even without damage, the air will seep out of the tires over time. So, at our tire center, we always check your air pressure and make sure your tires have the proper air pressure.

What If I Need New Tires for My Acura?

If you need new tires, at McGrath Acura we have a variety of brands and sizes to choose from. Usually, we offer weekly specials to help our customers defray some of the costs. We also honor any tire sales or rebates offered by the tire manufacturer. Most people buy two or four tires. The best ride is obtained when your tires on the front and back are all replaced at once. If you are getting two tires, we generally put the new tires in the front and move the other tires to the back for better handling.

What's the process when I purchase a new tire for my Acura?

Your new tire will be balanced> on a wheel to make sure it spins equally in all directions. Your technician will add weights to your tire, usually three, to make sure it has no vibrations on turning. Your tire is also checked for air pressure. Then it is ready to install. However, your wheels need attention once a new tire has been placed on it. There are three angles that must meet manufacturer's standards that are checked for each wheel. The caster angle is the inward or outward tilt of the tire steering axis and the wheel axis as seen from the front. Your wheels should be equal and not lean to any side. The camber angle is the actual outward tilt of your wheel. Your wheels should sit perpendicular to your car. The toe angle is where the leading edge of the wheel is facing. Your wheels should not lean either right or left. Bringing these angles into line is referred to as a wheel alignment.

Now Your Tires are Ready to Go

Now your tires are ready to go. Don't forget to check on them regularly so they will last the length of their warranty. Your tire expert is able to determine from your tread if one of the three angles are off on your wheels. Each angle results in a distinctive pattern on your tread. These patterns can affect the warranty of your tires.
