What Your Battery Does for Your Acura

The car battery's main purpose is to provide enough cold cranking amps to start the engine. Cold-cranking amps are the amount of amps that the car's 12-volt battery can deliver for 30 seconds at zero degrees without being drained to below 7.2 volts. Bigger engines, with larger starters, require a higher CCA rating than smaller ones. The battery also acts as a reservoir for electrical power when the alternator is maxed out or the engine is off.

How Your Battery Becomes Weak

Batteries become weak for a number of reasons including age, driving habits, and poor maintenance. If you don't check your battery's fluid levels or inspect the cables for corrosion, then the battery can fail prematurely. If you frequently drain your battery by leaving the headlights on, or by leaving the door ajar enough so that the dome light stays lit, then those also cause long term problems. Driving in very hot or very cold weather can also affect your battery's condition.

Signs That Your Battery Needs Attention

Since the battery's main job is to provide power to start the engine, one of the earliest signs that your battery needs attention is if you have trouble starting your car. You turn the key, but hear only a click or the engine cranking slowly. If you do manage to get your car started, your headlights will be extremely dim and may not stay on when the car engine is not running. You may also have illuminated warning indicator lights on your dashboard, most specifically the battery warning light.

Battery Inspection at McGrath Acura

If you are having trouble starting your car, or with any other electrical issue, then bring your car in and our technicians will perform tests on your battery to determine the cause of the problems. We will check your battery's electrolyte as well as check the cables for corrosion. In some cases, cleaning the terminals and replacing the cables are all that is needed but if the battery needs replaced, we have the parts to do so. Contact us to set up a battery inspection at our service center.
